Black Heads or Sebaceous Filaments

How to tell if you have black heads or sebaceous filaments

The constant fight with pores is no doubt an endless one , but the best way to sort out it is to know what exactly it it . Our skin mostly appears black at times at specific areas. What’s inside your clogged pores might be a black head or it might be a sebaceous filament.

First of all what are blackheads?

BLACK HEADS: are a form of acne that occur as a result of built-up sweat , sebum and dead skin cells. Black heads are open at the surface, once outside air hits the pore that is open and clogged , the sebum /dead cells oxidizes turning the pore black or grey color , hence the blackhead .

They can occur in different places but are most common on the nose .

SEBACEOUS FILAMENTS: are not like blackheads but they are often confused with each other. They are not a form of acne but a normal part of the human skin that appears when oil forms around a follicle. They are needed in order to carry sebum to the hair follicle. But when sebaceous filaments are visible they resemble black heads

Just think like sebaceous filaments and black heads are cousins with the same beginnings that is oil /sebum. The way to treat them is also going to be the same one. The safest way is to use chemical defoliates like BHA’s (beta hydroxide acids). These chemicals work well because they penetrate deep inside the skin and clear out the pores over there.

BASIC DIFFERENCE:

The main difference between the sebaceous filaments and black head is that black heads pop up randomly , are often larger in size and tend to be slightly raised while sebaceous filaments are flat and you can not be more than half an inch from your mirror to even see them. More over the above added pictures also clear up the difference that blackheads are actually black and are visible while the second picture shows that sebaceous filaments are some what different .

SQUEEZING OUT OF BLACKHEADS AND SEBACEOUS FILAMENTS:

Sebaceous filaments are a normal part of our skin so if you will squeeze them out you will not see a “cheesy string” out of them like a black head, as mentioned they are normal. So please avoid worrying about them and using magnifying glass to look at them. They will not cause an issue if your skin is well cared!

Meanwhile, black heads should be removed to keep your skin pores clear or they will grow larger in size. But this should only be done by a professional. They normally use steam and detoxifying mask to help loosen black heads and prepare them for extraction to clear those blackheads safely from the pores giving you a clear look.

Sebaceous filaments are normal but black heads are not ,so there must be causes of its production i.e:

Environment , hormones , oil etc
